Outdoor Lighting

When designing outdoor lighting, you need to consider the purpose of the lighting along with the basic methods for achieving energy efficiency. Outdoor lighting for homes generally serves one or a combination of three main purposes:

Illuminate the exterior of the house and landscape.
*Security
Illuminate the grounds near the house or driveway.
*Utility
Illuminate the porch and driveway to help people navigate safely to and from the house.

Light a pathway with a series of electric lamps or lanterns. Patio lanterns can be used to create a wonderful atmosphere for evening dinner parties. Weatherproof floor and table lamps may also be used to link an outdoor rooms to the house, allowing safe movements from one area to the other.

Outdoor lighting can be used to stunning effect in association with water. There is obvious need to highlight pools and patio areas for safety, but it also can be breathtaking to see illuminated reflections.

When setting up lighting for an evening party, it is often a good idea to add a few citronella lanterns as these will help keep mosquitoes away. Ultimately it is the effect of light that is important. There are many beautiful lamps and lanterns available, which are manufactured in weatherproof stainless steel, brass and cast aluminum.

Here are some basic methods for achieving energy-efficient outdoor lighting:

Don't keep lighted tabletop tiki torches unattended indoors, especially if there are children or pets, or any other elements that can cause the torch to fall.
