Garden Sundials
Sundials Lend a Sense of Time. Sundials are an ancient
method of telling time. The oldest known sundial was constructed in Egypt
around 1500 B.C. Romans perfected the horizontal sundial we know today. During
the Renaissance, sundials of every description were produced. The vertical
sundials were mounted on the outside walls of many churches and public
buildings.
By the 16th century more modern timepieces replaced the
practical usefulness of shadow-casting sundials. Still, there is a sense of
passing time and a century’s old tradition that makes sundials a beautiful and
functional accent for our gardens. Use a sundial as a focal point of your
garden or amidst some colorful flower clusters.
